The Kaduna State law, which was enacted in May 2004, established the Kaduna State University. Professor Abubakar Sani Sambo was named the first vice-chancellor. When Professor Sambo was appointed by the Federal Government to head the Nigerian Energy Commission, Professor Aminu S. Mikailu took over as second vice-chancellor. Professor Muhammad Tanko was appointed as the fifth VC after Professor W.B. Quirix and Professor Ezzeldin Muktar Abdurahman (2017/2021). From January to June 2022, Professor Yohanna Tella served as acting vice-chancellor. Professor Abdullahi Musa Ashafa took over as Acting Vice-Chancellor on June 22, 2022. The current provost is His Royal Highness Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, and the governing council chairman is Hussaini Adamu Dikko.
